Explore Piedras Rojas and Altiplano Lagoons: A Paradise of Colors and Magic in the Heights of the Atacama Desert
The Piedras Rojas and the Altiplanic Lagoons, located high in the Atacama Desert near San Pedro de Atacama, are tourist destinations that offer dreamlike landscapes and a deep connection with the nature of the Chilean Altiplano.
Red Stones. These geological formations, known as Red Stones, are located in the Salar de Talar area, approximately 4,200 meters above sea level. It boasts a unique landscape, with the deep red rocks, the result of iron oxidation, contrasting with the turquoise waters and pastel colors of the salt flat. The high-altitude location allows for panoramic views of the high plateau and nearby volcanoes, such as Licancabur and Miñiques. Its isolation makes it a perfect place to disconnect and enjoy the silence of the desert. Flamingos and vicuñas. It is not uncommon to see these animals in the area, especially around the nearby bodies of water.
Altiplano Lagoons (Miscanti and Miñiques). These twin lagoons are located within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, at over 4,000 meters above sea level. Their deep blue waters contrast with the white salt marshes and the reddish slopes of the surrounding hills. Guardian volcanoes are flanked by the imposing Miscanti and Miñiques volcanoes, creating a spectacular setting. These lagoons are habitat for various species of altiplano birds, such as ducks and flamingos. Vicuñas and Andean foxes can also be observed in their natural habitat. The area is protected, and visits are regulated to preserve its delicate ecosystem. Local communities consider these lagoons sacred sites and part of their cultural heritage.
